If you still think that chiropractic care is only about cracking backs, it’s time to make an appointment with Dr. Kat.
Dr. Katherine Kadin, DACCP, is the owner of and practitioner for Kadin Family Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Rockville and she specializes in caring for women throughout each stage of her childbearing journey. As she explains on her blog, Mostly Holistic Mama, Kadin began her practice because of her passion for health and wellness for all families. On this blog, Kadin covers topics which range from placenta encapsulation to improving immune systems to her own VBAC story.
It’s important to note that all chiropractors aren’t created equal. In recent years, specializations in chiropractic care have emerged in order to better serve clients with specific needs. Kadin, for example, is DACCP (Diplomate in the Academy Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics) board certified, which means that she’s completed rigorous post-graduate training in the specialty of treating the maternal patient and children. She’s also Webster certified, which is an essential distinction for any pregnant woman seeking prenatal chiropractic care.
From the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association:
The Webster protocol is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/SI joint dysfunction. In so doing neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is improved.
“A non-Webster chiropractor can still adjust pregnant women, but it’s the equivalent of having a basic primary provider for your birth,” said Kadin. “We know the difference between what’s normal and what’s not in pregnancy. We know about pubic symphysis discomfort. We know more about the common complaints of pregnancy and how to treat them.”
While Kadin adjusts and cares for women throughout each stage of pregnancy, including postpartum, she considers her practice a “pre-conception” one.
“Ideally, I’d like to start seeing women one year before their pregnancy,” said Kadin. “My mission is to fix people before they’re conceived.” She touches on this topic on her blog here, asserting that the healthiest children are born when conceived by healthy parents with optimally functioning nervous systems.
And because her practice is called Kadin Family Chiropractic & Wellness Center, there are additional services and practitioners available on site, including a second Chiropractic Physician, Dr. Brittany Harris; massage therapist Nicole Neely; Myofascial Release Specialist, Nyle MacFarlane; Certified Nutritionist Babette Lamarre; and Functional Nutritionist Lindsey Leh. Care for the Kadin patient is comprehensive and complementary. Additionally, Dr. Harris will soon be performing adjustments for laboring patients off site.
“We all work together,” Kadin said.
As a mother of two children who were each born with very different birth stories (a difficult cesarean and a VBAC, respectively), Kadin said that these experiences undoubtedly shaped her practice and caregiving manner.
“There is no question that it’s destiny that I had those [birth] experiences,” she said. “I see things through a completely different lens. I’m able to be empathetic.”
